How long does it take to get off of Buspirone after taking it and what side effects can occur!? I've been taking it for for 2 and a half months! 15mg 3x's daily with food. I do feel better but occasionally have anxiety in certain situations! Its said not to be habit forming, but i read in one of the answers that it is hard to get off!

Karl S replied: "There is a great thing of Buspirone....even if taken for months and months,,,THERE ARE NO WITHDRAWAL PHENOMENA... that is the beauty of this medicine,.,,you see, unlike other medicines that act decreasing anxiety, such as benzodiazepines (Xanax, Zoloft, Halcion) the blessing of buspirone, is that is a non addictive, non accumulating compound.....Your doctor should have explained that to you, at the moment of pre ion.... There are so many other examples, of non addictive, and witgdrawal sumptom free medication.,....buspirone is one of them., no matter if you took 20.-30 miligrams pthree times a day for months.-..Nothing will hapen to you, even if you stop it suddenly (no risk of craving or convulsions, as it happened with older medications)...."

lois d replied: "cut back one half pill a day take two and one for a week, then only two for a week then one and a half for a week then one half twice a day for a week then fininsh stopping the next week, shouldtake 6 weeks."

zx24251 replied: "I took Buspirone for roughly 7 months. It took about 2 weeks to work its way into my system but after that initial period I felt great. My most notable side effects were weight gain and depletion of my sex drive. Where as I was very perky and felt great I was so isolated emotionally from people in my life. I lived with my then boyfriend and it was hard to see myself putting him through so much and not being able to stop myself ...or not being able to change. I also suffered anxiety/panic attacks during the time I was on the medication which ranged from mild to severe. I didn't follow the suggestions of my physician and went cold turkey off of them without weaning myself. I felt so good I didn't think I needed them anymore. Big mistake....over time I spiraled into a very deep depression and ultimately tried to take my own life. I suggest you take your doctors suggestions seriously and discuss any problems you have prior to taking matters in your own hands. I myself was on 10mg 3x's a day and although I only suffered what I now consider mild "physical" side effects I suffered greater mental ones in the end. COMMUNICATION Talk to someone you feel comfortable with about any changes your scared of or desire to make."

How long does BuSpar (buspirone) take to kick in? For those of you who have found BuSpar to relieve anxiety, how long had you been taking it before you felt it working?

backwardsinheels replied: "I took it for a week to help with the anxiety brought on by another medication. It worked the same day for me. I call BuSpar "the Chill Pill" because it made me feel so relaxed and just cool with the world as it is - like I'd just had a massage or a spa day."

julesrules replied: "Hi Cisco, My Daughter was taking the Buspar. When it's your first time, the usual it takes 4 weeks to get the full effects, but in 2 weeks, you will feel better. Let me caution you, though------- this medicine helped her for a short while, then it lost it's effect and caused her worse Anxiety and paranoia you wouldn't believe! Crying spells and her fears escalated, it was HORRIBLE! Make sure with your Dr. that you have the symptoms that this medicine treats, or else it has opposite side effects you don't want.! Please go over this with your Dr. about Buspar, ok? Take care! BTW-----My Daughter is now on Zoloft and it works real well for her. She isn't any longer irritated and the Buspar caused this to happen.!"

Does anyone know anything about Buspirone? Like if it works and how long it takes before you feel the affects? Was it a good thing if you took it? I was perscribed only 5 mg to take twice a day and I am soooooo anxious with panic attacks that I am scared to take any meds. So please tell me any info you have. Thanks!!

Lance replied: "Buspirone (brand-names Ansial, Ansiced, Anxiron, Axoren, Bespar, BuSpar, Buspimen, Buspinol, Buspisal, Narol, Spitomin) is an anxiolytic agent and a serotonin receptor agonist belonging to the azaspirodecanedione class of compounds. Its structure is unrelated to those of the benzodiazepines, but it has an efficacy comparable to diazepam. GO TO: "

K13 replied: "Buspar is a great medication for a lot of people to manage their anxiety. It is something that can take a couple of days to weeks to work though. You might want to get started now so you'll have relief soon, otherwise the panic attacks may continue to get worse!"

allnightergl replied: "Buspirone is a psychotropic drug with anxiolytic properties which belongs chemically to the class of compounds known as the azaspirodecanediones. Buspirone shares some of the properties of the benzodiazepines and the neuroleptics, as well as demonstrating other pharmacological action. It attenuates punishment suppressed behavior in animals and exerts a taming effect, but is devoid of anticonvulsant and muscle relaxant properties and does not bind to the benzodiazepine/GABA receptor complex. Buspirone affects a variety of dopamine mediated biochemical and behavioral events, but is free of cataleptic activity. Buspirone has an affinity for brain D(2)-dopamine receptors, where it acts as an antagonist and agonist, and for the 5-HT(1A) receptors, where it acts as an agonist. Buspirone does not block the neuronal reuptake of monoamines and, on chronic administration, it does not lead to changes in receptor density in the models investigated. However, the mechanism of action of buspirone remains to be fully elucidated. Buspirone is rapidly absorbed in man and undergoes extensive first pass metabolism. Following oral administration, low peak plasma levels of unchanged drug, of 1 to 6 ng/mL were observed 40 to 90 minutes after a single 20 mg dose. In a number of studies performed in healthy volunteers, the mean half-life of buspirone ranged from 2 to 3 hours up to approximately 11 hours with considerable variation in individual values. Multiple dose studies suggest that steady state plasma levels were usually achieved within a few days. Buspirone is metabolized primarily by oxidation, producing several hydroxylated derivatives and a pharmacologically active metabolite, 1-pyrimidinylpiperazine (1-PP). Peak plasma levels of 1-PP have been found to be higher than those of its parent drug and its half-life to be approximately double that of unchanged buspirone. In a single dose study using (14)C labeled buspirone, 29 to 63% of the dose was excreted in the urine within 24 hours, primarily as metabolites, while fecal excretion accounted for 18 to 38% of the dose. In man, approximately 95% of buspirone is plasma protein bound, but other highly bound drugs, e.g. phenytoin, propranolol and warfarin, are not displaced by buspirone from plasma protein in vitro. However, in vitro binding studies show that buspirone does displace digoxin. The effect of food upon the bioavailability of buspirone was studied in 8 subjects. The area under the plasma concentration curve (AUC) and peak plasma concentration (C(max)) of unchanged buspirone increased by 84% and 116% respectively when the drug was administered with food, but the total amount of buspirone immunoreactive material did not change. The significance of this finding is not known, but it could indicate that food may decrease the presystemic clearance of buspirone. Buspirone had no effect on hepatic microsomal enzyme activity when administered to rats for 5 days. In man, the effect of buspirone on drug metabolism or concomitant drug disposition has not been studied. The pharmacokinetics of buspirone in patients with hepatic or renal dysfunction, and in the elderly, has also not been clearly established."

Emmy and Stevie replied: "I used to suffer with panic attacks and took buspirone for a short while. I found it started working after roughly 2 weeks and it did help although the problem i found was i could not orgasm during sex which i found weird. It also affected my sleep. Hope i could help, if your attacks are that bad just stick with them. If they don't help go straight back to your gp and demand something else because panic attacks are shit, i couldn't even go to the supermarket without freaking out."

HmgBrd replied: "I used to get "anxiety attacks" really bad in my early 20s, and for years, I thought surely I was going to have a heart attack, and too afraid to get on medicine for this once they told me it was "Anxiety Attack's" until one day I was working 2 jobs, raising 3 kids, and up late with paramedics in my apt., from having bad attacks, I finally gave in and went through "The human guinea pig" effect, for about 3 years!! They had me on paxil, buspar, elivil, prozac, you name it I tried it, until they finally put me, on diazepam.... But, I distinctly remember, the two, paxil, and buspar, the most, because with buspar, I thought I was going to have a "Heart attack" from the medicine, not the anxiety, (this time), and the paramedics had to stay in my apt, longer than ever, because I was so afraid for them to leave me alone!!! And so, I did not have a good normal experience with this drug, whatsoever!! And paxil, the same thing except I had to have my babysitter's husband drive me to the emergency room, twice!! From paxil.. I ended-up missing 2 days work, and the first day the doctor's told me I didn't give the medicine long enough to work, and sent me home to take it again so once I got to work, on the second day, before work started I told my co-worker, to tell the boss, I had to go to the emergency room once again, and miss work once again behind this new medicine, that's when I had to play "My own doctor!!" And tell them what would be best for me!! A friend gave me a valume many years ago, when I was having an anxiety attack so bad, she came out with the pill and told me take this, it'll help you! And I did, (this was before ever getting treated for it) and so, I remembered those days and her helping me that one time, and asked the doctor's if they could put me on valume and they gave me the generic form of it, so any of the pam's will work for me now.... Lorezepam, diazepam, or valume, I trust and nothing else anymore!! And I have to take 5mgs, 4 times a day, now.. to keep them away...... I didn't use to take them, except when I would feel an anxiety attack coming on, and my then , doctor told me to take all of them daily as prescribed in order not to get them!! And so I have to take all 4 of them every day, for years now...... And I highly recommend them to anyone who has anxiety.....so if the "Buspar" doesn't work out for you hun, definately request valume, or diazepam, or lorezepam, okay..... that's entirely up to you, I just want to help you, everyone's bodies are different, but its the "Mellowist" one I must say, after trying all of them, I have to say this one is the most successful one for getting rid of and keeping them away!!! The attack's I mean!!! Good Luck to you , hun!! Smile!!"

jen s replied: "Remember everyone reacts differently to medication. Buspar is an anti-anxiety, so it must work for some people or they wouldnt have it in that catagory. I took it and it u want to learn more about it go to my picture click on it and look at my questions asked, i asked some about buspar. i was put it feb 10 i gave it a mo and 1 wk, and it didnt work for me. made me worse actually, i shook all the time like i was cold and felt incredablt anxious at all times. i couldnt eat or sleep. i lost alot of weight which was the good thing about it except i felt like crap all the time. I talked to my therapist and she said buspar was so mild it was more like a placeebo affect then a med. i started zoloft and have felt a great amount of relieve. ive been of buspar and on zoloft almost two wks. the shaking stopped as soon as i stopped the buspar. it was weird. i really wanted it to work bc its a milder drug. just remember what didnt work for me may work for you. plus the only thing you can do is try it and hope for recovery, if it doesnt work in a mo u can try something new. if you have ant questions give me an e-mail. good luck."

Does Buspar/Buspirone affect memory? im taking 15mg twice a day, ive been on it for 6 days an have noticed(along with my husband) that im having trouble with short term memory(like "what did we get in the mail today" when i had already read it) I cant remember what i get up for sometimes and just feel kinda spaced out. This doesnt happen at the time that i take it. It just started yesterday and hasent gone away.

wildhorsejones replied: "Drugs block the release of acetycholine in the brain. The brain can not function without it."

st. george replied: "I was prescribed a similar medication and had extreme problems with recalling. Memory impairment of the short term type is inevitable when beginning the introductory phase of any chemical altering medication. This side effect will decrease with time as the chemicals adjust to the artificial additions. As for the spaced out kind of feeling....I'm up front in saying that meds took away my sharpness and ability to turn on in an instant....and I found that so hard to live with i sought Complementary therapies in a Kineisioligist, got off the meds, studied, progressed and never looked back. You will be ok you are so lucky you have a partner who knows what you are going through, good luck with this phase, it will even out."

How effective is Buspar (Buspirone) for anxiety and panic? Hi Has anyone taken buspar for anxiety? I have anxiety and the doctor has given me Buspar for "taking the edge" off. Im not sure if it is helping. i am ust wondering if anyone out there has taken it and how long does it take befoe I feel it kick in? Thanks

Dave replied: "I have a panic disorder and was given Buspar too. We all are different when it may work on some people just fine, but in other it dosent helpmuch or at all. Just tell your doc what its not doing for you and he will try something else. It didn't d me any good at all and I took it for a month and finally ended up taking Klonipin (Clonazapam) that help me with everything that could make me feel uncofortable. Even do public speaking. sak your doc and never drink if you take that."

Should I continue taking Buspirone if I solved the root cause of my anxiety problem? I feel much better now, knowing the root cause of my anxiety problem, so I'm not as jittery anymore. I've been taking this drug for only 2 days now. The only problem I have is when I'm in any nerve racking situation I'll get jittery again, so should I stop or keep going for a week to get a complete "system flush?" (doctor recommended a week or two when he prescribed this.)

ouragon replied: "TRy following the doctor's advice. That's why they get the big bucks."

Lacey replied: "Do follow doc's recommendation. Doubtful anxiety issues would resolve within 2 days. It was enough for you to go to the doc for treatment, so do follow his recommendation as the anxiety could easily return."

Anxiety medicine called buspirone? anyone know about it? Okay so today my Dr prescribed me Buspirone, i have never had it before, its for anxiety. can anyone tell me any side effects it has or how it might make me feel? is is similar to valium at all? i have had valium before but not this.

humpty dumpty replied: "People say it is like valium, but I haven't found that to be the case. I take it twice a day and have for a decade. I really have a hard time without it. It doesn't make me feel drugged or sleepy like lorazepam or clonazepam."

What went wrong with Buspirone? I started taking Buspirone at the very start of January for Anxiety and within a week began to feel alot better. This effect lasted untill about 15th when very suddenly I had not only a severe re-lapse of the anxiety but also felt terribly depressed which worsened the anxiety. Did anyone else find that they relapsed on Buspirone? And did anyone else find they started to develop a depression on it also? Is this a side effect as it isn't listed as one? Is the re-lapse and depression temporary? I decided not to take any today and still feel terrible anyway. My doctor has prescribed citalopram now but I'm weary of starting a whole new course in meds and waiting for effect especially as the buspirone was initially worling so well. I feel really desperate can anyone help?

all4oldchevys replied: "Buspar worked very well for me, but after a couple of weeks, a doctor usually recommends upping the dosage. It takes time for your body to get used to it, so you need to change the dosage. I had to up mine after about a month of taking it, and then it worked properly. I've been on it for four years to manage my anxiety."

mema replied: "buspirone takes many weeks to kick in if it works on anxiety at all. your imrpovement was most likely down to so called placebo effect, which apparently stopped. Actually in serious publications (see Maudsley prescribing guidlines) buspirone's efficacy in anxiety is regarded as 'unknown' if not 'doubtful'. as for your worsening : depression is not on the list of side effect of Buspirone. you may develop depression as depression itself. these are the side effects: Nausea Headache Fatigue Drowsiness Confusion Dizziness Paraesthesia Tinnitus Dry mouth Chest pain Lightheadedness Palpitations Sleep disturbances Tachycardia Sweating Nasal congestion Nervousness Restlessness Excitement Sore throat Seizures Clamminess get in touch with your doctor. as for citalopram: you have to wait up to 12 weeks for it to take effect in anxiety ( if there will be any effect at all). Anxiety management works much much better. and quicker."

jdydewing replied: "Buspar never worked for me at all which caused depression. Always being in a state of panic is enough to depress anyone."

Is Buspirone a good supplement to wean off Lexapro & Xanax ? I started to have panic attacks more and more frequently. I was prescribed 10mg Buspirone by ER Doc' after an Attack. I took it for a month, and was feeling ok on it, until I had another attack. The Doctor changed the meds to Lexapro 10mg/day and 0.5mg xanax three/day as needed for anxiety. Unfortunately, I am always anxious at present, and took them as directed, i.e: 3 x day for a week! I see a different Doc when I tried to get a repeat pre ion. Doc' was not too impressed that I was given Xanax and not told to of risks. Basically, I am taking the leaxapro and have gradually reduced the intake of Xanax to 0.25/0.5 per day from 1.5/2.0 per day over last two weeks. I feel exactly as I did before I was given this medication. In fact, my sleep is worse now, than when I was on Buspirone. I realise Xanax is really, really addictive. I would rather go back to having the odd panic attack and visit ER than be on this stuff. I feel like I'm being reprogrammed...any info anyone?

adamsjrcn replied: "Xanax's extended release version is an ok med, but the short-acting regular Xanax is prone to habituation and the withdrawal can be painful and difficult. Xanax and Buspirone don't cross-react, so one cannot use the other to wean. Ditto for Xanax and Lexapro. Each of these medications is in a different class. A slow taper off Xanax is the way to go. Good luck."
