Anyone else been stuck in bipolar mixed state (mixed moods) for long periods of time? What worked? I've been stuck in a mixed state (manic and depressed, i.e. agitated depression, dysphoric mania) for years, and can't take it anymore. I am trying to find space inpatient at a university hospital, because the psychiatrists in my rural area have no idea what else to try. I'm wondering, anyone else gone on like this? *What has worked for you?* Details: I take lamictal and lithium, low doses that help a little MAYBE, and can't tolerate more. I have severe side effects from most meds, like so constipated that I can't go for more than 10 days and have to stop the med, or go psychotic from the internal agitation increasing a lot, almost fall on the floor because I am so sedated, get aggressive, etc. I am probably a 'poor metabolizer' which is a genetic inability to process many meds (and most psychiatric meds fall in this category. 10% of white people have this trouble). I have had a lot of counseling. There is no question about my diagnosis. It used to be classic bipolar. Thanks!!

dawnO replied: "Well I am not a dr and I feel for you..My X husband is Manic depressive and he has mood swings as well as in one day he can get to be depressed and agitated. I dont know what to do for him I just try to deal with it....he doesnt sleep much unless he takes seraquel........have you tried to get into some holistic approach to this? maybe take some kind of martial arts to help channel the aggresiveness? I know these meds cause side effectrs and usually people with manic dont want to take the meds because it drags them down. I know lithium can be dangerous if the levels get too high. anyways I am sorry I am not much help but I do feel for you!"

words_that_live_on replied: "There is no recovery for all who don't change their social disorder into a safe socially structure. The depression chemicals were started by your own brain and will have to be cured by thinking."

jensarcon replied: "Well, anyone who says all you have to do is think differently obviously hasn't existed in a mixed state for very long. When I first heard the term "mixed state" and the accompanying definition I was elated because everything I had been trying to tell the doctors was right there and I wasn't so crazy after all. Or at least not so alone, eh? I also cannot take large doses of anything and I suppose must have this genetic predisposition. When I was on 60mg of navane I thought I'd go mad from the side effects, no matter the mental illness. Now I take topamax, wellbutrin and 100 to 300 mg of seroquel. It's a great combination for me. The one thing I really like about the seroquel is that I can really play around with the dosage and my doctor knows I do it, but it's one of those I can take 100mg. of for a while, then more if I'm having trouble, then more, then less, and I don't need to call him because I know what I need. Topamax can rightly be called "stupimax" because it makes me stupid sometimes, but stupid vs. mixed state, I'll go for stupid. The wellbutrin is the one antidepressant that doesn't send me through the roof. Prozac -- wow! I was a raving lunatic on that stuff. But wellbutrin has been good to me. Seroquel makes some people fat, but topamax has the opposite effect so that's good, too. I have plenty of energy. Some people take as little as 25mg of the seroquel. My husband who is also bipolar takes seroquel and it saved his life as far as I'm concerned, but it has made him gain a lot of weight. So good luck. I know how hard it is when they give you a small dose and you're knocked out. But I had 25 hospitalizations and none since this drug regimen, six years now."

Julie R replied: "You might want to try increasing your intake (or start to take) Omega 3 Fatty Acids - particularly flaxseed. See how you feel after a few weeks, then maybe even wean yourself off the pharmaceuticals. "

Marguerite replied: "Okay, I see some red flags. Your doses of lamictal and lithium are too low and not at a therapeutic level. How can they possibly keep you stable? Antipsychotics are often added on board with mixed states and agitated depression. They stabilize, calm the mania, deal with psychosis, and lift the depression simultaneously. You should not be stuck in this state for such a long time. This is unacceptable. Discuss this with your psychiatrist. Perhaps, different medications will react better with your physiology. There are meds too that people take to counteract stomach upsets and feeling too sedated. You have to address all of the symptoms. If your doctor does not do anything with your medication regimen, than I would seek a new doctor. You can feel 100x better and live a stable life. Hang in there. And go through the trials of different medications - without giving up."

Barry replied: "If you have not tried these already I couple things to experiment with: There was a Harvard Study a while back that found that taking Omega-3 fish oil by itself or as a supplement significantly helped manage bipolar symptoms. You would probably need to take these consistently for a long time before you notice anything. Consult your pharmacist. Otherwise sleep hygiene is very important and might be overlooked. Biorhythms are much more sensitive in individuals with Bipolar Dx. Keep a consistent sleep schedule - going to bed and getting up consistently on the same times everyday even weekends. I also think 'Marguerite' makes some good points."

Bellaruse replied: "I as well am bi-polar, and was diagnosed many years ago. Lithium is some bad stuff. I take Abilify now after having tried everything else(once on a cocktail of 7 meds. a day!). Abilify has been my miracle. It sounds like your meds. need to be changed. I know it's a scary thought but if this stuff isn't working out, you must try something new. You can't put yourself through this suffering. I reaaly suggest you try Abilify. If you already did and didn't feel a positive effect, maybe you need a higher dosage. Talk to your psych. about this. It's vital that you get on something that stabelizes your moods, or you have a great risk at losing it. I did and it ruined my life for that while. Please try it out. It can't be worse than what you have been and still are going through. It'll take a few (2 at most) weeks to build up enough to feel the difference but I've been on the same stuff you take plus others and found the one that works. One pill a day with no side effects vs. cocktails with horrible side effects would be worth a shot. Best of luck to you :)"

lexi m replied: "I'm not sure what will help you, but this is what I take for bi-polar with psychosis... this med mix works pretty well. Geodon 40 mg for mania (a low dose so I don't get the constipation so bad... even a low dose works for me.) Abilify 10 mg... it's not a magic bullet, but it cuts the worst of the depression. Lamictal 200 mg (mood stabilizer) I know you said that you don't metabolize well... I have read that Geodon metabolizes better when absorbed with food. Good luck!"

doug k replied: "I also get mixed moods. Most people won't be able to understand what this is like, unless you have experienced it. Several years ago, i got stuck for quite a long time in a mixed mood state. As a last resort, I had ECT treatments. That "broke" the mood pattern. While I didn't like the ECT at all, it probably saved my life."

Questions for those with Bi-Polar 1? was diagnosed with Bi-Polar 1 with mixed mania and depressive episodes. I've been seeing a psychiatrist who I finally had a run it with as he kept canceling my appointments. After I pointed out to him that his policies were inconsistent with the ones he kept himself he got mad and told me to find another doctor. He did provide me with my diagnosis as well as the official test I was given MMPI. He states " At this point after normalizing the clients mood with Klonapin we should consider lamictal, Lithium, Depakote, Trileptal or Topamax. After normalizing the clients mood I would consider antidepressants as a secondary treatment. So here is my question? I'm Broke and I can't go see another psychatrist. It cost me a fortune to get this. M.D's are covered by my insurance so he told me to just go to an MD and get the meds i need. However I do not know which ones or how much. In doing some research I see Abilify works well but generally is given in combination with something else. I woudl like to see some other people treatment plans that have been diagnosed with Bi-Polar 1 expexcially with symtoms of anti-social personality. If you could let me know your treatment plan dosage etc. I'm sure I can get an MD to perscribe if I know what dosage and what medication I need as I have my diagnoses on hand.

Elena C replied: "Hi, well my mom have a similar situation(not quitte the same, but still she has a personality disorder) I could recomend you a book called dsm-IV wich talks about Mental Disorders in a very explicit and simple way, but if you read it a bit you'll see that you can't really use the same medicines as someone else with the same diagnose, since everyone is different and mental disorders are a bit complicated the dose has to be necessary prescribed by a psychiatrist who is constantly watching your mood and how you feel, so he knows when to increase or decrease the dose according to your behavior, but since you can't afford one I could suggest you to search some place were they don't charge you as much as they usually do, or try to find some internet page where you can ask a psychiatrist questions with out paying, although the last suggestion is not a very god one but is all I can think of by the moment.I hope my comment helps you. Have a great day and remember life is like a mirror it smiles at you if you look at it smiling :D"

marypoppins4shure replied: "An MD will come up with a treatment plan & start you on the appropriate medicine from the list, with the appropriate dosage. Your list may be a list of options. He will be able to figure that out. Can you afford counselling as well as an MD? Sorry about the teenager comment...I hope your MD can help you. It's tough to have the original problem without the dr. "quitting". Is that professional? I wonder. Best of luck."

SUSAN K replied: "fish oil is known to help bipolar and depression and does not cost much read on curezone.com, their success stories also on alternativementalthealth.com, their testimonials also get enough sleep and eat healthy"

kix replied: "Fortunately I have great health insurance. I am so sorry that you are unable to get the proper treatment you need. I have been diagnosed with BP1, ADHD, OCD and anxiety. A mixed bag! I am on Depakote, Adderall, Zoloft, Buspar and Xanax. I have found that the medicine helps alot, but I still need to follow up with counseling and behavior therapy. Do go to your primary care physician to get a referral for a licensed counselor. The counselor can get you the meds, but also can see you for therapy. Don't give up! There are alot of free clinics out there and study groups."

Anna G replied: "If MDs are covered by your insurance, what's the problem? All psychiatrists graduated medical school and have an MD degree."

Ahorn replied: "Haven't you actually noticed that psychiatrists are clueless and all they are capable of is to prescribe you some experiment drugs? I would recommend you to watch following DVD that is available online if you have fast internet. It's told by psychiatrists, psychologists and people who worked for pharmaceutical companies. It informs you - beside other things - about side effects that are not often being told by psychiatrists. It also suggests an alternative in the end. When you then make a decision to take antidepressants, you may be better prepared, educated and understand what's going on when you encounter some bad side effects. I would say that these information are actually vital. The link sounds a little scary - thats because many antidepressants have suicidal thoughts and impulses as side effects which you can also read inside the pack of some antidepressants. ... what are the best meds for bipolar excluding....i WILL give best answer!? what are some good meds for treatment resistant bipolar with a tendency towards mixed episodes and more depression than mania? please leave out lithium, lamictal, depakote, topamax, seroquel and zyprexa. also, should i be taking an antidepressant plus a mood stabliizer??

ginabobina replied: "can't you use Prozac for that? Me, personally, I don't believe in taking Meds. I only use Sam-e to help me with my moods. It's a supplement you can find at a Hi-Health."

Willow.Star. replied: "With a mix of Valium 15mgs and Lovan 40mgs. Then you should have a balance. Recommended is going to a pycoligist and asking there opinion."

krachtm replied: "Have you tried Effexor? I've been taking Effexor for about 12 years now. I also take Neurontin as a mood stabilizer. Neurontin is a controversial choice for bipolar disorder, but I've found it to be helpful. Some studies have found a placebo to work even better than Neurontin, as a mood stabilizer -- according to Wikipedia, at least. Still, it's worth a try, if your psychiatrist agrees."

"Brain Shocks" from Celexa--> HELP? PLEASE? I halved my dose of Celexa two weeks ago, and quit it completely one week ago. I have been experiencing these strange and super annoying 'shocks' to my brain that jolt my vision and make me see a blue sort of line. It doesn't hurt necessarily, but it is very disruptive to thought. They seem to getting more frequent, not less, as the withdrawal period has passed. When will these go away? The other symptoms have subsided- i just got one again, damnit!- but this hasn't. Help, please! I have enough sh-t going on, and I don't need the constant distraction and annoyance of this! I am bipolar, was on the Celexa for a severe depressive episode in "crisis" dosage, and was left on it for too long... I flew into a very uncomfortable and aggravated mixed episode/mania for about 2.5 weeks just recently due to the antidepressant. I am also on Lamictal and Lithium

PATRICK C replied: "You tapered down your Celexa- so you shouldn't be having anymore issues from it. I would suggest consulting your physician about the other meds you're on. Alot of withdrawls from meds are psychosematic and hopefully an adjustment to the other meds will help with this. I was taking Celexa for almost 2 yrs- then one day just got super super angry---- they took me off and put me on Effexor. I have General Anxiety Disorder"

vaughn favrau replied: "dude you have to try other things. i used to take the same s h_t but i tried other things. you have t oslowly get off them and try new stuff. make sure people around you know wahts goingon so they can see if there is a change. thats the bestway you will figure out if there is a change"

Stephanie replied: "They will go away much faster if you drink water. It will flush it out. Give it about 2 weeks more. Good luck honey....I know it's tough!"

skin.tissue replied: "Either you did not taper off slowly enough or your body is just going to have brain shocks without Celexa. Studies believe that these shocks are harmless, only annoying!, and they should go away over time. The only thing I can suggest is to go back on Celexa and taper off slower than you did last time. But even then there's still a chance that you are going to have brain zaps, so you might just want to try and wait it out. If they don't go away talk to your doctor. How long to wait depends, usually this side effect goes away after a couple of weeks, but it can take up to a year or more to fully go away. I'm sorry, I hope they go away."

Gard23 replied: "The brain zaps are an antidepressant withdrawal symptom. Celexa (citalopram) withdrawal facts and figures (from Glenmullen) are: a) half-life of the drug is 35hrs b) Typical onset of withdrawal Day 3-6 (i.e. after each dose drop) Your body has had a very swift taper, little more than cold-turkey, and given the usual time lag before the onset of Celexa withdrawal, you are possibly experiencing effects from the first dose drop, which are being enhanced by the cumulative effects of the second drop to 0mg. There's no knowing how long the zaps can last, but they do abate with time. As another answerer said, some people are iving with zaps after considerable time periods - though at a reduced level of incidence/severity (or at least the anecdotal reports I've come across) - but, generally, most people find they abate with a moderate amount of time. Given that you had a swift taper and are only a few days into Celexa withdrawal, you may find that the withdrawal has yet to peak. List of withdrawal symptoms below, for your information."

I am bipolar and I have a delima.? Does anybody know of a mood stabilizer that you only take one a day instead of 3? I have been looking for patches or injections. I just hate capsules and pills that are not coated. I need something because I stopped taking my lithium and just had a bad episode. Mixed episode. Depression and Mania. Almost O.D. Just trying to escape the craziness. How do I deal?

krazymama2005 replied: "I take meds for the same thing and haven't found that magic pill yet.I'm still looking for it,too.Keep taking your meds and keep hoping science comes up with one."

Malkavia replied: "Well, I only take 1 tablet of Abilify as a mood stabilizer a day (20 mg). I haven't heard of any injections or patches. The Abilify tablets are not coated, however, but even my 20 mg tablets are pretty small. Please talk to your doctor about your episode ASAP. Talking to your doctor would be the best bet. As for dealing on a day-to-day basis, I've found that DepressionForums.org has many people there that are willing to share their delimmas and how they deal with them. There are also plenty of articles on that site that I've found helpful. Personally, along with medication, I've found that finding a hobby of some sort (painting and reading in my case) helps me escape the craziness. Also, exercise, particularly yoga, helps me too. Maybe you can find a hobby to get your mind off the craziness or just take a walk in the park on a nice day, if that's possible. Good luck to you! Edit: I forgot to mention that I take Abilify as a mood stabilizer in addition to Lexapro as an anti-depressant."

jen replied: "You need to go back to your doctor, and explain to him/her exacllty what you just said. By no mean stop taking the meds your are on. There are many new meds available now to treat you. As with all treatment, it is trial and error - what might work for someone, won't work for another. Changing meds isn't fun, a lot is involved (as you know) but once they find the right on - it's all worth the trouble. Good Luck"

What are the best bipolar medicines when nothing else works? I have been on everything Lithium, Depakote, Trileptal, Topamax, Tegretal, lamictal, abilify, risperal, geodon, zyprexa, seroquel, loxitane, and probably a few others i can't think of off the top of my head, but the main problem is mania plus some mixed episodes Im having every day I tried taking my medicine at different times at well and that didn't work either I was wondering if there are any weird old or new or any medicines that i haven't heard of that may help when nothing else helps

? replied: "I have heard that some foods can trigger the symptoms, so if you reverse that and look into foods which can help. man made chemicals are not good for you as you probably know. I dont know much about your condition but I do hope that you can find a way to help yourself experiment for one week on fresh. local foods only and see what happens best of luck : )"

Imnotplayin replied: "If you have been jumping from shrink to shrink this is dangerous. Stick with one treatment plan. Other than this, my advice would be to get yourself slowly weaned off these medicines, if you are on more than one or two. They can be addictive in and of themselves. Try more natural therapies like meditation, deep breathiing, counseling, talk therapy, and get an endocrinologist to check for any abnormalities in your adrenals or thyroid, as well as your hormonal levels. You could do well with some natural products at health food stores. There could be something lacking in your system, or working overtime. (By the way, they are using you as an end user for the pharmaceutical companies.) Some of the drugs you mentioned are highly dangerous and can have really bad side effects. You think somebody isn't making money off of you? Think again. Been there, done that."

Meds or No Meds... Your Opinions and Help Please? I am bipolar II, diagnosed last year. It first became apparent when I was around 12, although there are indications from my childhood, as well. I suffer from severe, debilitating depression for extended periods of time and uncomfortable mixed episodes for weeks at a time, with the occasional 'good' mania. I have been on Lamictal, Remeron, Citalopram, Lithium, some other antidepressant, and multiple sleep medications. I am currently on 250 mg Lamictal and 900 mg Lithium, and just dropped Citalopram today. I hate waking up every morning to realize I am only functional while on meds, and knowing the meds are what dampen some of the good things about me. Therefore I have convinced my doctors (endlessly) to drop some of my meds. We started with the antidepressant, as it made me insanely manic for about two weeks just recently. He finally relented to letting me begin cutting down my Lamictal starting next week (although I tried once before and became a paranoid sonofabitch... not pleasant.) He says there is little chance I would be allowed off Lithium. What is your take on drugs? Do you think I, Anna, should be on them? Yuck. My parents are fighting and throwing things. Lovely. F-cking family :( I am 16 yo

mike l replied: "I hate pills too! I just got to keep changing till i find the one that works"

Kiki replied: "Unfortunately, I think you should be on them. You probably just haven't found the right ones yet. I'm not entirely sure about the mechanism of bipolar meds, but I know that most anti-depressants affect everyone differently, and most shouldn't dampen who you are. I am not bipolar, however I am on a med that is commonly used for bipolar, called Seroquel. I love it. It takes away my depression and doesn't take away my personality. It is tough knowing that you can't function without medication, I know. But it's not your fault, you have chemical imbalances that need to be fixed. I would not recommend going off of the lithium for any reason."

lanek replied: "that should be you and your drs call...i felt the same way but i know now that in order to have a happy healthy life i need the meds..and i will take them for the rest of my life.."

Ali Baba Son replied: "I truly am sorry to hear about your struggles. I am bipolar 1 which means I rarely experience depressing moments and I am always manic. I was once on lithium and now I am on Lamictal. I think, since you were apparently in need since 12, you should stay on whichever works best. I DONT think you should be crossmedicated like with your sleeping ones and other depressent medications...that seems excessive. Sometimes there are medications like patches..but queer I know. My sister is similar to you though, and when off her medicine she tried to kill herself 3 or 4 times. Don't let that become a problem. I hope everything works out though."

thanthanyousee replied: "I think it would not hurt to seek a second medical opinion. Please I am begging you as much as people want to help in here none of us are in the position to give you medical advice. Especially something this important. There are many choices out there, so hang in there until you find the right one. But again, a second or even third opinion would not hurt."

abagail replied: "Definitely take your meds. Tell your family, it's too bad you have to keep yourself calm by taking medication because they are going crazy like a bunch of honyocks! Ask then if they want to share your meds.. JK"

cooulguy replied: "Lithium does suck, I know too. You should probably get a second diagnosis, as bipolar disorder is very tough to diagnos. You're going to need meds, absolutely. There are other ones you could consider, in higher doses, like lexapro, or zoloft. You could pair this with psychodynamic, or talk therapy for a while. This really is the best approach. You could also try xanax, as anxiety generally ties it's way into the picture."

DJ Luminus replied: "I was diagnosed with social anxiety disorder and panic disorder without agoraphobia when I started college. I began therapy with a counselor which helped some but never really solved anything. Eventually he suggested I see the university pysch and see about starting psychiatric medication. I was on Zoloft for about 2 days then I decided not to continue with antidepressant treatment. I'm not sure in your case, but after a lot of thinking, insightful research, and just following my heart I decided I could deal with my anxiety without drugs. You have to make the choice for yourself. Doctors won't always tell you everything about the drugs, and some downplay the side effects and risks. Personally, I don't want to take something that messes with my brain chemicals anyway and hasn't been thoroughly researched either."

gardensallday replied: "I have bipolar disorder that has never responded very well to meds (been trying since 1994) and believe me, you don't want to see the way this illness progresses without effective treatment. I was in a PhD program for geophysics in my 20's - now I'm 43, no kids, no job (total disability). I am on the edge of suicide every time I get PMS, and every Nov-Jan, and random other times. I've been in the hospital about 15 times for suicidal mixed moods. The meds are awful, but there just isn't anything better out there right now. so you gotta keep working the problem with your doc. If 600 mg of lithium wasn't enough, and 900 mg is too much, maybe you can get lithium citrate and take 750 mg a day or get lithium pills you can cut in half, instead of capsules. The mixed moods will get more and more and the nice manias less and less as you get older. Sorry to hear all your problems - looks like a lot of us folks with bipolar go thru all the same stuff."

shaneris replied: "It's unwise to stop antidepressants; cold turkey: (especially benzodiazepines, such as Citalopram) they should be weaned off, to prevent the possibility of adverse results, like seizures, "skin crawling", and "brain zaps". I'd resume taking a half dose, for some weeks, with medical advice as to how long. DEPRESSION: My standard posts follow, but, if you are young, antidepressants are unsuitable for young people. See depression treatments, at ezy build, below, in section 2, and consult a doctor, to eliminate thyroid problems, etc. as possible contributing factors: also seek a referral to a therapist using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy. It is your decision, and yours alone, as to whether to take any antidepressants offered, but, before you do, read section 1, and check medications out at so you will be on the lookout for side effects, like sexual dysfunction. My strong recommendation, however, is to follow the advice of my doctor, his associate, and Nathanial S. Lehrmann, MD, Marcelle Pick, OB/GYN NP, and Dr. Mercola, at and many others: avoid antidepressants (pages 2V, and 2Z refer, & antidepressant websites: page 2). The reasons why we all share the same view on this are explained in full, as you will find, if you read the whole section. All of their advice, (except prayer, because many people are not religious) I have incorporated into the "core treatments" of the multidimensional approach to treating depression, including occupational therapy, relaxation techniques, and exercise, with others as options, such as the supplements: Inositol, or SAMe, or herbal remedies, like St. John's wort. If you are diagnosed with clinical (major) depression, antidepressants may be necessary for a while, which will give the treatments time to become effective. The antidepressants themselves need at least several days, or even weeks to begin becoming effective. It's a good idea to taper off them slowly, with medical advice, after several months, say, to a couple of years, at most, because they are only effective in the long term for about 30% of people. Because of this, you would be well advised to begin the treatments immediately, and maintain them. I'd just thank your mental health care provider, and pocket the pre ion, trying the treatments for a few months, to see if they are sufficient for you, before considering filling it (unless clinically depressed, and having great difficulty functioning, or suicidal, in which case I'd take them). If the amount of daylight you have been exposed to recently has reduced, perhaps due to the change of seasons, see Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.) in section 2, at and, instead of taking 4 Omega 3 fish oil supplements, daily; replace 2 of them with cod liver oil supplements for the winter months only! (or, as probably a better alternative to the 2 cod liver oil supplements: 1 teaspoonful of cod liver oil, with a little butter, to ensure its use; I take mine on sourdough rye bread, or toast, covered with fishpaste, and pepper, to mask the strong taste). Consider having your doctor test your vitamin D levels, using the 25 Hydroxyvitamin D test. Optimal levels are 50 - 55 ng/ml (115 - 125 nmol / l. It should be above 32 ng/ml. Those people who receive adequate exposure to sunlight, daily, won't need the vitamin D from cod liver oil, but many people, particularly those in latitudes far from the equator, find this difficult, to achieve. ~~~ BIPOLAR DISORDER. My standard post follows: See bipolar disorder, at ezy build, below, in section 10, and take the quiz, if unsure, and if the results are positive, ensure you get an expert diagnosis from a mental health professional, not doctors, who are much better dealing with physical ailments, and don't diagnose complex disorders like bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and borderline personality disorder often enough to develop any real expertise. Bipolar disorder usually involves major mood swings, which occur without apparent cause, and often over many months, or a matter of years, rather than days, as with most people (unless rapid cycling). I'd take 4 Omega 3 fish oil supplements daily, replacing 2 of them with cod liver oil supplements in the winter months, (or, as probably a better alternative to the 2 cod liver oil supplements: 1 teaspoonful of cod liver oil, with a little butter, to ensure its use; I take mine on sourdough rye bread, or toast, covered with fishpaste, and pepper, to mask the strong taste). Those people who receive adequate exposure to sunlight, daily, won't need the vitamin D from cod liver oil, but many people, particularly those in latitudes far from the equator, find this difficult, to achieve. If you decide to use allopathy, (modern Western medicine) I recommend trying Lithium Carbonate, or Lithium Citrate. (regular tests are necessary, for these) before trying the other mood stabilisers, but if you aren't good at taking medications regularly, drinking adequate water, and keeping up your salt intake, something else may suit you better. Check out "lithium" at, and and always research medications first, (read, and keep the labels/information sheets) so you will be aware of the risks, and on the lookout for side effects. (Personally, if I wasn't bipolar type 1, and didn't experience hallucinations, or serious delusional states, I know I'd first try the orthomolecular, and Omega 3 fish oil supplements, vitamins, minerals; a herbal remedy, such as St. John's wort, and a mostly raw food diet, for several months. I'd aso eat in accordance with my "nutritional type". Enter that term in the searchbar at ). If not considerably improved, after several months, consult your primary mental health care provider: you may be one of those who need medications to prevent this progressive illness from getting even worse. If bipolar type 1, an antipsychotic medication may also be needed. Everyone should take the Omega 3 supplements, or preferably "krill oil" for its other health benefits: use the searchbar at . Some people refuse medication, using supplements, and a selective, mostly raw food diet (I do not recommended trying this, if bipolar 1, unless you aren't troubled by hallucinations, or delusional states). Maintain the treatments for the depressive phase, in section 2, at: Some topics in section 10 include: treating bipolar disorder with supplements, vitamins, minerals, and herbal remedies. As with all medications, there are risks, and the possibility of side effects, which is why I inform people of the alternatives, to see if they can cope sufficiently well , without resorting to medications. Don't use medications and supplements together, without medical advice, except for Omega 3, which is safe. ~~~ Ultimately, the choice is yours, but I have serious doubts about the wisdom of prescribing antidepressants to people with bipolar disorder, because it is known to induce mania/hypomania. Incidentally, Lithium Citrate come in syrup form, if you wish to reduce your dosage, easily, and precisely. Read section 1, at ezy build, as well."

john carcerano psych counselor replied: "you don't say your age, but it's tough for you for several reasons. your a normal teenage kid who wants to live a normal teenage life but you are restricted because of your condition, and the fact that you take these meds that don't agree with you. the good news is that when you reach your early to mid twenties you will have grown up quite a bit and should have a better take on how to properly treat your condition with the best meds and the least amount. of course this only comes through trial and error. i admit that your being a growing teenager and having to learn to stabilize a serious disorder with mind altering chemicals is not an easy thing. but the quicker you get to understand how to identify your condition and get a handle on it in the best way, the sooner you can live a more normal life. to go off your meds will cause you more problems than being on them. learn to cut down on your stress drastically because stress will fuel your disorder negatively, and also keep away from drugs and alcohol because you are a prime candidate for addiction. just get to know what you need too, in order to live near normal as possible. i have anxiety problems that i wish i would have learned to control earlier in my life. but i didn't and as a result i was a hardcore alcoholic for 14 years. i'm 13 years dry now, but my turning to alcohol for self medication was a very costly mistake in my life. good luck."

jackie replied: "Anna Your parents are fighting and throwing things because they are scarred and frustrated and their stress levels are in orbit. You know the answer to your question unfortunately. Before you even think about going off your meds, you have to be stabilized. You know you are not. Please be patient. You already experienced what will happen when your doctor decreased ur lamictal. That was not good. I asked my son to call you and Im sure he didnt. Sigh. He is in denial. Theres nothing wrong with him. Sighhhh. Im dreading mid term time and stress on him, but as you told me, he has to learn for himself. As for your parents, I can tell you first hand what they are going through. Things fly around this house quite often. We are constantly fighting. Looking deep inside, I realize I am scarred for my son, I am frustrated, I love him so much and so does his dad. So I guess we fight cuz we're ashamed we cant find the answer to our kids problems. I see my son is going a little faster now that tests are here. Not mid terms, but just tests. He doesnt sit still. Im waiting for the other shoe to drop. That is unless a shoe is flying, LOL. I really dont know what else to tell you. I really wish I knew. Im sorry I couldnt be of any help. I just beg you to be patient. Thats all. Things gotta get better. Right?"

Mojitabean replied: "I can feel you on the parent "thing"....it's the most ridiculous situation you can find yourself in...sometimes fights come for no damn reason, tell me...I've lived that all my life....about your medications I've read most answers, I'm not an expert, but it seems that you should keep taking them, hopefully as you grow older you'll know what meds are best for you."

Questions for Bi-Polars? I'm a medicated Bipolar and have been taking lithium (and mood stabilizers) for the past 12 years. I have lost interest in things I used to be passionate about, like painting, sculpture, photography, art history, music and poetry. These were things I produced heavily when I was in white mania (the euphoric periods), and now that my swings are much mellower I can't pull out creative ideas even when I get the fleeting desire. Other aspects of my personality have dulled down as well. All of my art world friends have abandoned/shammed me for having killed off my inner artist with meds or some because I've become boring. I absolutely must remain on these meds because of the nature of my black mania, fast and steep depression and the most dangerous, the Mixed State of the two. The above losses (passion, personality, friendships, etc) are necessary sacrifices to balance out my family, my stress, and my self preservation. My questions to other Bi-polars are: Have you found similar loss of intrests/personality since you've been medicated? And a couple of odd questions here; Are you or were you seriously creative too? Are you left-handed by any chance?

Kaatie replied: "My friends mother is bi-polar, she sed before she was on meds, she was a writer, and painted all the time. After she was on meds she just lost interest in writing and only paints when she really feels like it, and even then can't really do work anywhere close to what she used to be able to do. Sorry, not sure if she was right or left handed, but I dont think that would have much to do with it."

Old Salty replied: "I was told to act the way I wanted to feel. Feelings follow actions. It worked for me. Plus they added Efexor to my meds. I am fanatically creative. But I'm right handed."

yours truly replied: "I am left handed and creative i used to be on lithium but the drugs just dull your mind so i stopped. Let me try to explain how you can deal with your depression with out drugs. Wisdom is the cause of your depression. You see things in a different way because of your wisdom. Most people go around performing an identity, fake and superficial people, you have self awareness. In a world of fake superficial people you are often driven into a rage by any little thing, but it is the accumulation all the crap you put up with on a daily basis and not genetic or a chemical imbalance. Being self aware allows you to tap into your genius in humanities and arts, that is the benefit of being a human being. The downside is that you have to deal with all the sick people around you, for this reason I suggest you read "the eight fold path". The most important thing to know about bipolar disorder is that you have "awakened"."

Can someone explain something about bipolar disorder for me? Let me just explain how I have felt for the past 3 years. 1. I started off with severe depression, like seriously i had lost all will to do ANYTHING. I was like this for a good 6-8 months and then I became rather normal for about a month and then right back into depression for another 4-5 months. 2. I told myself that I shouldn't be depressed and tried having fun, that fun became a pretty intense manic episode. That lasted for about 2 months and then it became a weird mixed episode where I was really confused, depressed and manic. That lead to another severe depression for about 2 months where all I did was drive around Boston everyday for a month, with no will to do anything else. I was just angry at EVERYONE but didn't do anything about it. I think I the depression came from the fact that I lost my voice for 3 months due to smoking (I quit) I sounded like an old man. 3. I became normal, actually pretty normal, for I would say 4 months. 4. Worst episode ever hit me, I was again manic and depressive at the same time, seriously I was going insane during this time. Also I became slightly paranoid about a few people thinking they were plotting against me. 5. Coming out of this mixed episode I visited a doctor that didn't tell me what the hell I had, just gave me Lamictal and Lithium, which didn't even help. I told him that lithium is hard to ingest because the pills are huge and the doctor laughed and made fun of me, BYE BYE YOU JERK. 6. For 4 months I became hypomanic, now this was the nice one, because I had very high productivity and was feeling really euphoric, excited and having fun. 7. Right after the hypomania I had a short burst of depresion for a good 2 weeks. Really I lost all will to live, and stopped doing everything. 7. This episode eventually became a very dysphoric and intenese manic episode which lasted till about August of this year when it became an anger mixed episode, I just wanted to hurt people, I was picking fights with everyone, I was destroying things, during this time all I thought about how horrible my life is and how I want to die. Seriously, I should have been hospitalized. 8. Around 2 weeks ago, I leveled off pretty good, and the first time in over a year and a half I felt normal. 9. This week I went to the doctor, and again this new doctor didn't explain what I could have, he just said "it definitely seems like bipolar disorder" and he gave me zoloft. I do understand though, he can't diagnose me this quick, and the doctor is a really nice and down to earth guy. 9. Before I started taking zoloft, I did start feeling hypomania creeping up on me again on Sunday, and it kinda did, now taking the medicine, I still feel hypomanic. Now medicine aside, I can't for the life of me figure out what my diagnosis would be. I know it is definitely bipolar disorder, but which kind? Is this similar to Bipolar 1? or Bipolar 2? Or rapid cycling bipolar? or cyclothymia? I have another appointment with the doctor in 2 weeks, and I will ask him, but I am kinda going crazy trying to figure out what this is because I want to do research on this. Could this be something else from what I have decribed? Mania is filled with euphoria at first then dysphoria afterwards, racing thoughts, increased sex drive, wanting to waste money on everything, talking very fast and sometimes very loud, irritated, angry, on the edge, etc. Eating a lot of none at all, less sleep. EXTREME boost of energy, and no concentration at all. Depression is usually a lot of sleep, hyposomnia, eating a lot of none at all, wanting to die, but not suicidal, hatred towards everyone, no energy at all, laying in bed all day, Thinking about how hurt I am, and how everyone hates me, etc. Mixed episodes for me are just like both combined, but less extremities, like my sex drive is not that high, and I sleep the least during this time, money aint really a problem, BUT the anger and rage is there. This is where I contemplate suicide a lot and the urge to hurt, make someone suffer by taking away something that makes them happy, or even kill someone is constantly running through my mind.

Ms Cat replied: "Everything you describe can be explained by Bipolar Disorder. I have Bipolar 1 though I have never been psychotic. I struggle with mixed states and rapid cycling and extreme mania. Rapid cycling technically is "4 distinct mood swings in a year", however you can cycle as fast as every few minutes, which is what I do. I go from depression to normal to hypomania to mania which then starts to rapid cycle and gets faster and faster until it becomes a mixed state. Very ugly indeed. there are even two different mixed states, agitated depression or dysthymic mania. Bipolar 1 and bipolar 2 are basically only a difference in intensity of the mania, mixed states or rapid cycling. Zoloft is an antidepressant. Antidepressants alone do NOTHING for mania, in fact they can make mania worse or push you into a manic state. You need a mood stabilizer and something to combat the mania too. if you like this therapist then stick with it and when you find the meds that work stay on them!! Email me if you'd like to chat about it more."
