Can Depakote cause hair loss? I have been on Depakote now for about 5 months. About 2 months ago, I started losing my hair. Not just pieces breaking off but globs and brushfulls of hair from my roots. I went to get my hair cut last week and my beautician told me that my hair is really healthy but I really need to contact my doctor because something is definently wrong. I know that it is not my thyroid,I just got that checked out. I am on other medications but my Pharmacist told me that Depakote and Flexeral(which I don't take often)may be the issue but my doctor who prescribes my Depakote told me he does not think that it is from the Depakote. Just wanted some insite from you all. Maybe you all have been on Depakote before and have had this problem.

Michael Jacksons Glove replied: "depakote (valproic acid) can definitely cause alopecia, which is a medical condition that causes your hair to fall out. it's a rare side effect that happens in about 5% of people who take it. you should talk to your doctor about it again and see if there's another medicine like it you can take."

Dr. Lisa Minalto replied: "yes! of course it can!!! year ago I suffered very much from dandruff and hair loss too and I started trying everything you can imagine to stop my hair loss. the things that really worked for me was: 1) Vitamin A - an anti-oxidant which promotes healthy production of sebum in the scalp; 2) Vitamin E stimulates circulation. Good blood circulation in the scalp is important in keeping hair follicles productive. The 'B' vitamins contribute to melanin, which gives hair its healthy color and also stimulates blood circulation; 3) massage is also beneficial. Massage stimulates circulation. As already noted, good circulation in the scalp keeps hair follicles active. Experts suggest a few minutes of daily head massage by hand. Circulation through massage may be improved by using a few drops of lavender or bay essential oil in an almond or sesame oil base with massage; 4) Try rubbing your scalp with garlic juice, Onion Juice or Ginger Juice(you can either of one out of three, Do not mix any of two or three); 5) also I used herbal treatment - Provillus (do not use Rogaine - it will not work!) It is a good products that helps prevent hair loss and contains Biotin and the clinically tested ingredients approved by the FDA to help re-grow your hair.! I think it is very important! It worked and still works for me! I do not know if any pharmacies carry Provillus but I do know that you should purchase it directly from the manufacturer and read more about the product here It enhances hair growth by blocking DHT (Dihydrotestostrone) - a major cause of hair loss! Also Informative video about Provillus - good luck! not only my own personal experience + working as a family physician "

Brittny replied: "Yes, what Dr.Lisa told is True. Hi Friend, my daughter is also suffering from same problem. And I once told this to one of my best friend in my Office. She, told me about hair regrowth product called "Provillus For Women", I used "Provillus For Women" which is free and now I find lot of difference. Her hair is growing rapidly and is healthy now. I'm 21 and my hair is falling out due to a necessary pre ion medicine (Depakote ER)!? I'm currently taking Depakote ER for migraine prevention but it is causing my hair to fall out (not clumps causing bald spots, but a lot more is coming out per day then used to). Getting off of the medicine is not an option as the migraines are severe and frequent and other medicinal options have caused worse symptoms (try multiple kidney stones). The only thing I have tried for the hair loss is to replace my daily multi-vitamin with Centrum Silver (it is for people 50+ and is supposed to have something to help with hair loss). Any vitamins ideas or tips would be greatly appreciated!

trh232003 replied: "Hair loss occurs in 5% to 10% of patients taking Depakote. It is uncertain whether more hair is lost when higher doses of Depakote are taken. The hair almost always grows back after the Depakote is stopped, but it often has a different texture. (For example, it may grow in curly instead of straight.) Taking selenium (10-20 mcg per day) and zinc (25-50 mg per day) helps some people to prevent hair loss."

I have been taking depakote for 5 years now, does anyone have info on long term effects? I have heard things about hair loss to liver disease, any info would be helpful.

doc susie replied: "Depakote = divalproex sodium: a stable compound made up of sodium valproate and valproic acid in a 1:1 with 0.5 sodium hydroxide. 5 years is a long time to take depakote. Has it helped with your health? I was unable to locate a long term human study. A 2 year study was done on men and women taking 50 mg a day. Depakote has been associated with birth defects, females of child bearing age should avoid this drug. There are some adverse effects caused by Depakote. Chest pain, neck pain, hypertension, anorexia, leg cramps, edema, twitching, abnormal dreams, confusion, insomnia, hallucinations, vertigo, deafness, dry eyes, eye pain, tinnitus, dysmenorrhea, urinary incontinence, flatulence, in-coordination, depression, skin rash, sensitivity to light, and toxic epidermal necrosis. Not to mention bone marrow suppression, irregular periods, anemia and cough. This drug is extremely hard on the liver."

Wizzard2 replied: "good luck to ya- i really mean it"

have you taken depakote for mood disorder, and what were your symptoms? i was just put on depakote today for depression/bipolar, and i keep reading about serious weight gain and hair loss. any personal experiences, good and/or bad? i'm a little iffy about taking this med.

Lacey G replied: "Try it. It's worth a try to be more stable. If you have ionable side effects, your doctor can change the medication to another mood stabilizer."

Alaskan Beauty replied: "I got the same effects. Weight gain, hair loss & sluggishness."

steve m replied: "depakote is an anti epileptic med that is licensed for mood swings.... It sucks....... All the stories are true..... Beside that they are huge things....... And have some seriously nasty interactions with other drugs.. like clonazepam..... And you should have regular blood tests....... But on the positive side....they are cheap..but nasty!"

sweetsnickers replied: "I have been put on it for bipolar as well. I gained weight and a little bit of my hair fell out. But these things ca be managed. The side effects do go away after a couple of weeks. So if you find a drug combo that can help you stay balanced then no side effect will matter. Good Luck!!!"

lexi m replied: "I took Depakote and I gained about 40 pounds. Now I take Lamictal (200 mg) instead and I'm at the thin end of a normal weight. Lamictal works fine for me."

I got depressed and the doc got mad at me for not taking Depakote? I was fine for six months? I thought Depakote was used to curb the highs and I had a depressive episode recently with no manic episodes for six months. Do I really need Depakote? I heard it has bad side effects like weight gain and hair loss and how does it make you feel? Doc says I am bipolar but I have only been hypomanic twice and it was all due to drug overdoses. Should I take this drug??? I am fine now b/c I took my anti depressant and a natural supplement.

lexi m replied: "If you feel fine, then I would keep doing what you are doing. You could get a second opinion with another doctor, too. As for me, Depakote did cause about 40 lbs weight gain, but now I'm back to a normal weight with Lamictal 200 mg which is another mood stabilizer. Personally, I don't notice much of a difference between being on and off Lamictal, but I take it just for extra security. The doctors really push having me be on a mood stabilizer."

Cstorm replied: "No, Depakote is NOT just for the depression. It's a stabilizing drug, and you should NOT NEVER EVER skip a dose. There are two types of medications: Immediate and gradual. Aspirin is an immediate drug. You feel the headache, you take the pill, and in about a half hour you feel better. Depakote is a gradual medication. You don't pop a pill in the morning and be 'not depressed' by lunchtime. It has to build up in your system and maintain a presence even when you DON'T feel depressed. It's always an uphill battle to keep patients on Depakote continuing the cycle of medication. Quite often, a patient begins to feel better and he/she thinks, "Great! I don't need to take it now!" Once they've stopped the daily dosage, the medication's presence in the body begins to fade. Eventually, the mind begins to suffer the same old problems but now it will take weeks or months for the drug to re-establish itself in the body. The best thing you can do is be consistent in your medication. Not only will it help the drug to work better, but it's hard on your body to adapt to a medicated state over and over again with breaks in between. Do what the doc says! Take the pill!"

I am an epileptic. Are my side effects normal? My side effects include: headache, fatigue, weight gain, abdominal pain, infertility, constipation, nervousness, anxiety, stress, lack of sleep, seizures when I don't sleep, gas, dizziness, nausea, blurred vision, no concentration, lack of comprehension, and hair loss. I take valproic acid. (depakote) I almost think that it would be better to have seizures everyday!!!! Help!

sondra replied: "talk to your doctor he may need to change the dosage"

bbbv10 replied: "Talk to your doctor about switching medications there are a lot of good meds out there you just seem to be taking something not right for you."

anyone having positive feedback on depakote? I've read nothing but negative-is there ANY hope for me out there? Just diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and this is what my doctor insisted I start on-"for now". Feeling VERY discouraged about it, I keep reading about massive weight gain and hair loss. Anyone out there who's taking it and having an alright time?? Give me hope!

The Cheese Queen replied: "My doctor had me on depakote for years, it never worked for me at all. but I never had any negative side effects. ask your doctor about abilify, i take that and it works wonders."

Experiences with Depakote? I have heard a LOT of negative things about Depakote including weight gain and hair loss!! I was just wondering if anyone would share thier thoughts/experiences with the drug! I just started taking a week and 2 days ago and wanted to know what those of you who ARE or have been on it thought! THANKS! I actually have PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and am "slightly" bipolar (I have SOME hypermanic episodes, but not many and they are very few and far between!) and I dont handle anti-depression medications well (they throw me in the OPPOSITE direction and I get worse on them) so they decided to try a mood stabilizer instead. Like I said, I have only been on it for a week so I havent really noticed much of a differance! I AM concerned about the weight loss which may sound vain but I worked HARD to get back to 120lbs after having 2 kids!! I also dont know how my depression would get better if I was feeling unattractive! LOL

likely s replied: "I was on it for 5 years. Several things happened to me. 1) I gained tons of weight; 2) I become diabetic; 3) I got high blood pressure; 4) My thyroid level went down the tubes & I had to take thyroid medicaion; 5) I had severe chronic diareha (so bad, I couldn't leave the house in 5 years becuase I had to stay by the toilet)--this diareha was also taking it's toll on me because I became very dizzy when I'd walk around & ended up in the E.R. a few times to get fluids pumped into me because the poddy problem was making me lose too much fluid too quickly (diareha is a common side-effect); 6) after 5 years on it, it never relieved any symptoms. Now I'm off psychiatric medications, & I've been back to normal ever since. Considering what depakote is used for, I assume you were diagnosed with some type of mood disorder. Since it's a mood disorder, I'll share this with you as well. All of the symptoms of mood disorders look exactly like what perimenopause produces. Perimenopause occurs in both sexes and can begin as early as age 5. As soon as the reproductive hormone levels start to decrease, people usually get some symptoms. In women, estrogen is the culprit, in men it's testosterone. Perimenopause and menopause terms are usued interchangeably. Perimenopause is the time before the hormone level has reached it's lowest point, till that point it's decreasing in level. For a good list of the symptoms of menopause (also called perimenopause) see these websites: 35 symptoms of menopause Male menopause (with identical symptoms as women) On that list of menopause symptoms, you'll see the symptom of "sleep problems not cause by hot flashes". Having any sleep problems can cause the symptoms of "mania", and you can refer to this website for the list of sleep symptoms & other information on it: A little history for you: I found this out the hard way. I was on bipolar treatment & it turned out to be menopause (I'm female). When I got off the psych medications & used hormone treatments I finally got results--all my symtoms left & never returned, unlike the psych medications which produced no effect except for making me very ill. I know it may to be hard to think you were misdiagnosed in the first place or that hormones could do that, but it's true. Hope this helps. Good luck."

greenstateresearcher replied: "My daughter took it for a month and did gain weight and had little effect on her problem it was prescriped for.Everyone is different. Her doctor changed medicine to Topomax.Good luck and if you do see a problem talk to your doctor."

Meng replied: "My husband was on it for 10 months or so and gained perhaps 5 lbs or so (but was already a bit heavier than he was supposed to be). He quit taking it a few months ago and has lost some weight, but that probably has more to do with working on fixing the house we just bought (involves lots of physical labor) than with him quitting Depakote. So, basically, I don't think Depakote really had any influence on his weight. Odds are that as long as you eat healthily Depakote won't make you gain any/too much weight. My HB didn't lose any hair either, afaict. There are people with negative stories about ANY medication... I'm sorry but all medications have side effects. Depakote actually seems to be one of the more benign ones in our experience, but there are of course individual differences. Also, for bipolar the dose is pretty low, whereas people with seizures get a way higher dose and hence probably have way more side effects."

Depakote and Percocet? My doctor just started me on Depakote (500mg once a day at night). I have read so many NEGATIVE things about this drug and I am a bit scared to tell you the truth. Another thing is that I am already on 6 Percocet 10-325's a day (sometimes more) for chronic pain. Does anyone know if these two interfere w/ each other. I know that I can take them together but it seems that the Depakote makes my percocet "less strong." Is anyone else out there on BOTH the medications?? Can anyone give me any info on Depakote and your experiences with it!? I am scared about the hair loss and weight gain!! I just started the Depakote yesterday and want to STOP taking it if I need to before I get too "dependant" on it. Any help would be extremely appreciated!! Thank you so much in advance!! no.. I dont have a weight problem. I am 5'3" and weigh 122 lbs. The problem is that after having 2 kids I FINALLY lost the weight and am once again happy w/ the way I look. I dont want that to change!! I am taking it b/c I can NOT take anti-depressants (they throw me in the OPPOSITE direction) and I suffer from depression. I know that it is a mood stabilizer. I am just scared of all the horrible things that I have heard about it. I am calling my doc on Monday to see what else is out there and my other options but it being the weekend and all.. I was just hoping to have some input before then! Thanks again to all of you!

Billie77 replied: "I can understand your concerns about taking this medication. I think a person's gut instincts are usually correct. Talk with your medical doctor about your concerns and why you feel this drug may not be for you. This is mainly used as an anti depressant and for help with chronic pain. There are other medicines like this with less side effects. What I don't like about this medicine is the extreme possibility of liver problems and the necessity to have your blood levels checked monthly because of liver complications."

inkedcalf replied: "Depakote is NOT an anti depressant. It is a mood stablizer. But u will need to have ur blood checked regularly. ALso u need to take the medicine regularly (if you stay on it). If you dont take it regularly and they check ur blood it could look like your depakote levels aren't high enough and the doctor could increase the meds not knowing the level is low because it is not being taken regularly. But all in all, talk to your doctor again because it sounds like you are not wanting to try this medication."

I'MaBree replied: "First of all, what are you taking the depakote for? It can be used for a couple of disease states. There may be other options that don't cause as much weight gain depending on what you are using it for. However, your doctor should know that so I am assuming that you don't have a weight problem to begin with. I would moniter your weight to be sure that depakote isn't affecting your weight As far as anyinteractions with Percocet, there are no major ones. However, they can both cause drowsiness so please be careful while driving or doing something that requires full alertness (like watching a baby etc). One little point I want to bring up, is that if you see symptoms of liver damage that include weakness, tiredness, swelling in the face, and loss of appetite, please continue to take your medicine - but contact your doctor as soon as possible."

djjojo replied: "Hey there i have been on that medicine back in 97 or 98 and yes it is a bad drug. There are more out there that can do a better job with your moods then that drug.I had a bad reaction with it.It make me flip out and start seeing things and headaches like crazy.I do have to have Pain medicine every day for my leg.I take Oxycontin 20mg 1 every 12 hours and lortab if i need them.I would like to have the percocets more then i would these Oxycontin yeah they are the same medicine but i like the percocets better.I can control them better.Anyways i hope you get what your looking for talk to the Doctor.Take it easy.and if you need any more questions answered just E-mail me.JOEY"

rayehawk replied: "Dump the Depakote - can result in huge weight gain. Put 80 lbs on my already fat butt in 6 years. (Not fat anymore! :o) Topamax can do the same prophylactic job and may have weight loss as a side effect. Studies indicate that taking 400mg each of Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) and Magnesium Citrate (www.vitalady.com) can also help prevent migraine."

My Face(Please Read)? Hi, OK, I'm posting in Women's Health, because I'm a 15 year old girl. Here's the problem I'm having. I have a disability called CP, and I can't walk without the assistance of crutches, and I use a wheelchair as well. I also have epilepsy which is in general the condition of taking two or more seizures. I am on the medication Depakote. I take 750mg a day. I am also on two vitamins, and I know for sure that one of them is called Selenium. I am on the vitamins because a side effect of the Depakote is hair loss, and well I'm a beautiful red head who doesn't want to lose her hair, so I've no choice but to take them. Throughout the school year, (this past year, the year prior, and for the next two years of high school) I have to get up at 6AM to get ready for school, no if ands, or buts. Doing so causes me major headaches , and sometimes I have trouble concentrating as well. Along with these headaches I have this weird face pain, it's almost like a migraine sort of. I know their migraines during school because anything and everything bothers me there, even the lights. Ever since school has let out for the summer, and since I get to sleep in more the headaches have gone away, however, I get the face pain still, and it constantly feels like my face is being smashed. I try to be in bed by 9:00PM or 9:30PM during the school year, and 11PM during the summer. I was at the doctor on Monday for a physical, and I'm healthy, except for the fact that I need a new pre ion in my glasses, one that's stronger, and I'm going for an eye exam next week, but I told my doctor about my face pain, and she said "Your medicine will handle it." I've been on it for at least 5 months, and it hasn't done much to handle my face pain, but it does help cut back on the amount of headaches I get. They switched me to this medicine because the kind I was on before was too strong, and made me like a zombie. What the heck could be wrong with my face? No doctor will listen to me when I tell them about it, they sweep it under the rug by saying that my medicine will take care of it. What can I do to stop the pain? -Isabel

Gizmouse replied: "Two things I can think of that I have experianced are allergies/and/or sinus infections from the allergies or "turtle syndrom" which is sleeping with something over your face like a blanket and not getting enough oxygen. Both cause the pressure around your nose and eyes that feel like there is a weight on them as well as a headache in your temples that sort of throbs especially when your around a light source. With mine it also feels like there is a slight constant pinching at the top of my nose between my eyes too."
